The California Windshield Technicians Association (CWTA) is reminding vehicle owners to not skip on the scheduled windshield wiper blade replacements of their respective wiper assemblies. As part of their windshield care information campaign, the CWTA emphasized that replacing wiper blades as scheduled helps prevent windshield damage. AutoGlass Safety Council

CWTA President Luke Davidson says, windshield scratches usually emanate from using wiper blades that are already ripe for replacement. “The worn out wiper blades can scratch the surface of the windscreen, or worse, the metal portion of the windshield wiper can scrape across the windshield.” To avoid this, Davidson says, vehicle owners should set a regular schedule for wiper blade replacement even if the blades still look fine. The CWTA head explains “it can just look fine but it is brittle already.”

Yourmechanic.com also shared their thoughts on the damage worn-out wiper blades can bring to the car’s windscreen. “a damaged wiper blade can and often does scratch a windshield. The older frame designs are much more prone to this problem, in part due to their extended use when the owner opts to install refills. The refills themselves, which are most often the first point of failure, contain hard metal that can scratch a windshield.“ Read the continuation here.

The CWTA also encouraged vehicle owners to regularly clean wipe clean their wiper blades. Doing so does not only protect the wiper blades from premature damage, it also helps prevent windshield scratches. Davidson explains dirt and debris that may have accumulated in the windshield can also accumulate in the wiper blade area damaging both the rubber and the windscreen. “It is in the best interest of car owners to keep their wiper blades clean,” says Davidson.

Automotive Magazine Top Gear also mentioned yet another cause of windshield damage that emanates from wiper blades. “We're all guilty, at one point or another, of accidentally turning on our wipers on a dry day. Sand and abrasive debris usually get caught between the wiper blades and your glass; the last thing you want is to create friction between the two. Even through years of proper wiper use, it will be inevitable to get wiper marring on the surface.” Read their write up here.

The CWTA emphasizes that when it comes to avoiding scratches, prevention will always be the key. Since wiper blades are in contact with the car’s windshield on a permanent basis, it is just rational to keep it in good shape so that it can never cause damage.
